On this second day of Christmas, the song calls to mind two things we spend little time thinking about. The gift of scripture.
The song chimes:
On the second day of Christmas my true love gave to me; two turtle doves.
The two turtle doves are our calling of the Old Testament and the New Testament. Scripture is a living thing. It is not dead meaningless words.
The Old Testament serves in many ways as the book of the old law. It is the law of rules that are uncompromising and influenced by the world that surrounds them. The New Testament is the new law. It is the law of love that rules the new testament.
May you have love today that abounds with the living word.
