EWTN Global Catholic Network announced today the appointment of Ursula Murua as President of EWTN News, effective Nov. 1. Murua, who will succeed Montse Alvarado, brings three decades of Catholic media experience and more than a decade of leadership in EWTN News’ digital growth and transformation to the role.
Longtime Catholic media and digital leader to guide EWTN’s global, multilingual news organization into its next chapter.

Murua currently serves as EWTN News’ Director of Digital Strategy and Editor-in-Chief of ChurchPOP, EWTN News’ digital brand with significant reach among younger audiences. Over the past decade, she has been a key architect of the digital direction of EWTN News, providing strategy, audience insights and leadership as the organization expanded its digital platforms, multilingual reach and approach to storytelling.
“Ursula understands both the mission of EWTN and the rapidly changing ways people encounter news, faith, and one another,” said Michael P. Warsaw, Chairman of the Board and CEO of EWTN Global Catholic Network. “She has helped shape the digital transformation of EWTN News from within while remaining deeply committed to the truth of the Gospel and the teachings of the Church. Her experience, global perspective and understanding of our audiences make her exceptionally well prepared to lead EWTN News into its next chapter.”
A native of Peru, Murua’s career in Catholic media spans more than 30 years and predates EWTN’s acquisition of the Spanish-language news service ACI Prensa, where she was part of that organization’s early growth. Since joining the EWTN family, she has served in leadership roles across digital, editorial and broadcast operations, including as a member of the EWTN Noticias team, EWTN’s flagship Spanish-language nightly news broadcast.
Murua played a central role in expanding the Network’s social media presence and digital platforms and has helped craft multilingual digital strategies supporting EWTN’s global news teams and affiliates. Her career has included leadership of digital coverage surrounding three papal conclaves, multiple World Youth Days and Jubilees, International Eucharistic Congresses, Synods of Bishops, and other major moments in the life of the universal Church.
“I have had the extraordinary privilege of watching Catholic media transform from radio and broadcast to websites, social media and mobile platforms, and now confront the challenge and promise of artificial intelligence as we seek new ways to reach people around the world,” said Ursula Murua, currently Director of Digital Strategy at EWTN News. “But the reason we do this work has never changed. People are hungry for truth, for meaning and ultimately for Christ. Our responsibility is to understand where they are, how they are searching and how we can faithfully meet them there.”
Her appointment comes during a period of significant transformation for EWTN News. In January 2026, EWTN united Catholic News Agency and the ACI Group under a single global EWTN News identity and launched EWTNNews.com, creating a new digital home for its global, multilingual news service. The upcoming launch of Spanish and Portuguese-language versions of EWTNNews.com represents the next stage of that transformation and reflects EWTN’s commitment to building best-in-class platforms capable of serving a truly global Catholic audience.
“As President, Ursula will continue the work we began together, expanding EWTN News’ digital presence and developing new ways to reach audiences while strengthening our commitment to journalism rooted in fidelity to the Gospel,” said Montse Alvarado, outgoing President and COO of EWTN News. “I have watched Ursula devote particular attention to understanding audiences at every point in their journey of faith, from deeply engaged Catholics to people encountering the Church, or even the Gospel, for the first time. That audience-centered approach has shaped EWTN News’ digital strategy and offers a powerful model for how digital missionary discipleship can be done well.”
