Teddy hated going to his father. He despised asking him for anything. Most of all, he hated that this situation would make him look weak. As he drove down the highway he steeled his soul and mind for the assault that was going to take place. He drove into the parking lot of Dino’s restaurant.
His dad always had lunch there. He had the exact same table each time Teddy had ever visited him to have lunch.
The restaurant was shades of tans and taupes. The leather finish surrounded the trim of the booths and tables boasting richness, strength and class.
A beautiful young woman approached the table as Teddy sat down and a memory came flooding back as he looked into his father’s light brown eyes.
Teddy looked up into his father’s eyes.
‘But why dad?’ Teddy asked.
‘You know why. We’ve been through this several times. I do not want you driving your hoodlum friends around. Period. End of story. Keep hanging with them and you’ll end up in jail or worse. Leon Ainsley callously flipped the car keys on the table and walked away.
‘You mean like you… ‘, Teddy murmured. Before Teddy could react, his father struck him hard enough to knock him to the floor and draw blood.
‘When you live in your house you can do what you want. Next time I’ll break your jaw.’
Teddy snapped back to the present.
‘So Teddy what mess have you gotten yourself into? ‘ his father questioned.
‘It’s not what have I gotten myself into, it’s what I have inherited.’ Teddy challenged him. Teddy had always challenged him. He knew his son had achieved minor respect in his field, married a good girl and kept his nose clean. The only questionable behavior his son had ever had, was the penchant to hang out with those young men he called friends. They weren’t the people he would have chosen for his son’s company.
Teddy shoved the note across the table. He watched his father read the note.
‘What do you want me to do Teddy?’
‘I want you to help me.’
‘Oh wait… my son who acts like he doesn’t know me every other day of the year gets a little shook and wants me to “help” him. That’s rich kid… that’s really rich.’ His father sipped his whiskey and stared at his son. He could see the fire of rebellion blazing in his son’s eyes.
‘I need your help, but I am not going to beg.’ Teddy pushed his chair away from the table and stood up.
‘Sit down Teddy. Hey Daley bring my son a shot of tequila would ya.’ He motioned to waiter who had been standing nearby.
Teddy eased back into the chair and welcomed the shot and downed it.
‘Okay, just so that you know that I am familiar with what is going on, I want you to know that the streets are talking. Most of them are terrified that they are going to piss me off, so I know something is in the mix.’ Leon stared at his son .
Teddy motioned for another shot.
‘So son, I want you to know that I will do whatever I can. I have ordered us some lunch, so let’s eat and enjoy the food. ‘
As the waiters began to place their lunch down, Teddy opened his tan napkin sighed. He realized this was the first time in a long time he had a full meal. He was going to enjoy it.
He cut his steak and motioned for another shot.
