Think before you speak. I know that this does not sound glamorous. I know it may sound over simplified. It is valuable advice though.
Scripture says:
Ephesians 4:29-32
29 Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. 32 Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.
Recently, I ran in to this. I wondered if it were worth my energy to speak at all to those who I felt ‘injured’ my good reputation. Once harsh words are said, you can’t take them back, you can only live them down. Hurtful words are more damaging than physical hurt, leaving scars on the soul and spirit. Restraining our lips is an indication of wisdom and humility.
May our words be guided by the Holy Spirit’s love and self-control.
